Halo4 - Wraparound by TomScholes Halo4 - Wraparound by TomScholes
A concept of mine from my time with Microsoft's 343 Industries was just released on Halo Waypoint, and though it's a relatively simple painting I'm proud of what it accomplished and what I learned from it.

The image was an experiment with Photoshop CS5 Extended's 3D capabilities and is actually composed of a dozen or so instances of an unrelated, re-purposed 3D asset created for the game by Senior Environment Artist Chris Lewis. The details are a compilation of Custom Shapes created for the project by the Art Director Kenneth Scott.

See the Halo Waypoint blog post here:

It's been exciting to see more and more released about the game, really can't wait to play it ! Good luck guys, miss ya !

I hated Halo 4's horrendous, heinous art direction changes. Fuck. Halo 1 to Halo 2 was bad enough.

Thanks for your comment! I'd love to hear any specific issues you had or even simply what you loved the most about the look of Halo 1 :) There was certainly big shoes to fill on Halo 4, big complicated beloved shoes.
It helped me to realize that I wasn't really making a Halo for guys like me that grew up on the first, rather I was trying to give new gamer a similar experience in their youth. Any thoughts in this regard?

Sorry for sounding like a jerk but I haven't gotten over it yet. >_<

The original Forerunner architecture style had an obscure impression. Hey You! Green man! You didn't come to me to blow me up! You came here to get under my pants! Dump your blue girlfriend!

The new style is indistinguishable from a 2010 SUV dealership which likes to pose their cars in absurd orientations. Meh

Halo 1:

All of Bungies' Halo games had dirt on the Forerunner metal (rain for years by the thousands), sometimes with embevelled patterns. Their designs appeared curiously functional and culturally coherent -- at least much more than Halo 4's do. Now they look like chrome staple guns hanging on strings.

This isn't Halo 4, but it's pulling from it:

There's a lot wrong in this picture aside from its poor JPEG quality. I want to kick someone in the ribs. How is this CONSIDERED GOOD!? Damnit 343i. Your virtual texturing / compression tech is not sufficient to completely depreciate texture wrapping.

Here's a Halo 4 screenshot:

I honestly don't know how to say it. Why aren't cacti sexy? Because there's nothing sexy about them!
Why isn't Halo 4's art direction good? Because there's nothing compelling about it!

Even Halo CE Anniversary's artists redid Master Chief in a way which I didn't like. They removed the vent-grates and replaced them with earthworm tubes, just like Halo 2.

Look at how dorky this looks:

You probably had no control over this, but please suggest to people around your workspace (where ever you work now) to cut 90% of the rubbish post processing out (because it's inevitably there, if you're working on a game). Tonemapping is fine, but please keep the bloom down. Isn't this obvious? So, which intern must have f**cked around with the bloom parameters right before the game shipped? Go on YouTube and watch any Halo 4 gameplay video. It seems anytime I look at the game, 1/2 the screen is 100% white and the other 1/2 portions are only somewhat darker (90% white) with a very desaturated tone.

I want to be there.
